Welcome to Dentokan Dojo

Dentokan Dojo is a private traditional dojo located in Frankfort, Indiana, which was established in order to preserve and offer disciplined instruction in the traditional martial arts of Okinawa and Japan.

We believe in training in the martial arts the traditional way without the interference of organizational politics and without the inherent impediments of a more commercialized atmosphere.

We belong to the Sekai Dentokan Bugei Renmei [World School of Traditional Martial Arts Federation], which was founded by Roy J. Hobbs as a means of providing instruction and certification in certain traditional martial arts of Japan. Rank for the arts taught here is certified by this federation.

At Dentokan Dojo, you can expect to find an atmosphere that is simple and disciplined yet friendly and welcoming. A strong emphasis is placed on the comprehension and application of the underlying principles of effective technique as transmitted to us through the kata syllabus as well as a strict adherence to proper protocol. This is not a sport karate dojo; therefore, our training focuses on combat applicability in the context of life protection, not on point fighting or competitive sparring.

The art that is represented at Dentokan Dojo is Shorin Ryu Karatedo, which is an art with traditional roots in Okinawa.
